Adopted by the assassin known only as Cain (who happened to be one of the great masters that trained a young Bruce Wayne), Cassandra was raised her entire life without any spoken or written language. Instead, she learned to read people's "body language", so she could actually know the next movement of an opponent. This was so she could be Cain's wild card, a living, breathing killing machine.

But Cassandra was horrified at the tender age of seven when she made her first kill, and made a vow never to do such a thing again. Eventually, she escaped from Cain and after much world traveling, ended up in Gotham City. There, she struggled to survive on the streets until the Cataclysm, and No Man's Land.

Then, she became a messenger for Oracle. Through a slew of incidents, she proved her worth and valor as a fighter, and when the Huntress was stripped of her Batgirl status, Cassandra took over. Now, as a seventeen year old girl and with NML over, she lives with Oracle, by day learning how to read and write and live a normal life, by night fighting crime alongside Batman.

One remaining mystery about Cassandra was the identity of her mother. She went on a search and discovered that Lady Shiva is her mother. Batgirl and Shiva battled once more and Shiva was defeated and left hanging near a Lazarus pit.
