Jervis Tetch began his criminal career disguised as the Mad Hatter due to his obsession with hats and a startling resemblance to the character as depicted in Sir John Tenniel's illustrations from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Captured by the vigilante known as the Batman and his side-kick Robin, Tetch was judged insane and incarcerated in Arkham Asylum.
